Freebase e-liquid uses the freebase form of nicotine, which has a higher pH than nicotine salts and produces a more pronounced throat hit at equivalent strengths. It is the original nicotine format used in e-cigarettes and is well-suited to open tank systems and higher-wattage devices. Freebase e-liquid uses unmodified nicotine that is absorbed more slowly and delivers a noticeable throat hit, particularly at strengths of 6mg/mL and above. Nicotine salt e-liquid has been modified to reduce pH, resulting in a smoother inhale at higher concentrations, typically 20mg/mL to 28.5mg/mL. Freebase is generally recommended for sub-ohm or higher-wattage open systems, while nicotine salts are better suited to low-wattage MTL pod devices.
